چکیده

Optical observations of 66 sprites, using a calibrated commercial CCD camera, were conducted in 2009– 2010 and 2010–2011 winter seasons as part of the ILAN (Imaging of Lightning And Nocturnal flashes) campaign in the vicinity of Israel and the eastern Mediterranean. We looked for correlations between the properties of parent lightning (specifically, the charge moment change; CMC) to the properties of column sprites, such as the measured radiance, the length and the number of column elements in each sprite event. The brightness of sprites positively correlates with the CMC (0.7) and so does the length of sprite elements (0.83). These results are in agreement with previous studies, and support the QE model of

Analysis of lightning strokes associated with sprites observed by ISUAL in the vicinity of North America

We examined the broadband (< 1 Hz to 30 kHz) lightning sferics associated with 395 sprites observed near North America by the Imager of Sprites and Upper Atmospheric Lightning (ISUAL) onboard the FORMOSAT-2 satellite in a 12-year period from 2004 2015. Our analysis indicates that the ISUAL dataset contains a significant fraction (69, or ~18%) of negative sprites, which were predominantly (> 80%...

Charge moment change and lightning-driven electric fields associated with negative sprites and halos

[1] Sprites are structured high altitude optical emissions produced by lightning-driven electric fields. Both strong positive and negative cloud to ground flashes (CGs) are capable of initiating sprites. However, reported sprites are almost exclusively produced by +CGs. The very limited number of negative polarity sprites makes it difficult to reveal their morphologies and mechanisms. Since 200...

Mesospheric Electric Field Transients due to Tropospheric Lightning Discharges

A physical picture and quantitative two-dimensional electromagnetic modeling of mesospheric electric field transients produced by cloud-to-ground (CG) lightning discharges with short duration currents (<0.5 ms) are presented. The range of applicability of existing quasi-electrostatic models of sprites and the physical conditions under which relatively weak CG lightning discharges (thundercloud ...

Detectability of sprites above lightning storms on the giant planets

Large sprite discharges at mesospheric altitudes on Earth have been found to be physically similar to streamer discharges in air at sea level density. Based on this understanding, we investigate possible sprite discharges on the Gas Giant planets through laboratory experiments on streamers in H2-He gas mixture. Streamer diameters, radiance, and emission spectra are investigated and compared to ...

Mechanism of column and carrot sprites derived from optical and radio observations

[1] The lightning current waveforms observed simultaneously with high-speed video records of a column and a carrot sprite event are incorporated in a plasma fluid model to provide quantitative explanation of these two distinct morphological classes of transient luminous events. We calculate the strength of the lightning-induced electric field at sprite altitudes using a time integral of the ion...
